St. Martin’s, in the extreme SE corner of Guernsey, is one of the 10 Parishes in the island and since 1998 it has been entered in the Bailiwick’s‘Floral Guernsey’ Community Competition’
Each year, the overall winner of this competition is invited to enter the national Britain in Bloom competition – thus last year we were the chosen Parish (our 5th year of entry in ‘The Bloom” !)A small, very hard working, and almost totally volunteer team, under-take to do what is necessary to enter these floral competitions, and try to enhance the Parish, able assisted by both St. Martin’s based and other individuals and organisations located throughout the island. Over the last 15 years, huge changes have taken place in St. Martin’s Parish as a result of the Floral Team’s efforts. Probably the most obvious can be seen along La Grande Rue and Rue Maze (the 2 main roads in the centre of the Parish), but deliberate attempts have also been made to involve other parts of the Parish as well – such as large scale bulb planting at Jerbourg and Moulin Huet Valley, a continuing development of the Wild-scape pond area, copse and new garden areas at the Primary School, renovation of the former War Memorial site at Croix Bertrand and the Old Mill triangle (previously a small area plagued by vandalism and grafitti). Vital links have also been made with other Parish based groups – such as The Fountains & Troughs Committee(and the renovation of the many abreuveurs [watering places] in the Parish, and The Environment Committee and new paths and bulbs at Moulin Huet valley.
Not only has St. martin’s parish been enhanced, but the parishioners have gained a much greater sense of community spirit and involvement.
Together we CAN make a difference !
Very excitingly, this year St. Martin’s has been invited to enter the Canadian based “Communities in Bloom” (Collectives en fleurs) International Challenge.
Judging will be for 2 days in August, and the results will be announced in Edmonton (Canada) between 10th – 13th October.
This is the first time any group from the Channel Islands has entered this prestigious floral competition.
